Great turn out for STARS games today…

Miguel and I headed over a little after noon today and watched quite a bit of the games played today at Libbey High School by the STARS League. The Mayor arrived, then District 2 Councilman D. Michael Collins. I almost thought no media was going to cover the proclamation ceremony today, but WTVG did come to cover the ceremony aspect and it was nice to see them there.

The games we watched were pretty good, with a few edge of your seat moments that always adds to making watching football fun. The one side of the Libbey Stadium was pretty full and there were lots of others watching from various points of the field. Video below is of the complete proclamation ceremony including words by Mayor Finkbeiner and Councilman Collins:

The day Corn Hole came to Toledo…

Okay, technically not Toledo since the Corn Hole Tournament was in Rossford at the IBEW Union Hall, but today was Governor Strickland’s Toledo Division of the Corn Hole Tournament.

You would have thought with the Governor coming that there would have been quite a few elected officials, since many of them used photos of him and them as part of their campaign material…but? Only one elected local official was there, Councilman Michael Ashford, who learned today that Corn Hole is much harder than it appears:

STARS set to celebrate 50 years of a love of football and the volunteer spirit…

As someone who has lived in South Toledo almost all of my life, it seemed appropriate to take a few moments to point out that S.T.A.R.S (South Toledo Area Recreation Society) is celebrating 50 years of the program’s existence. In 1958, the league was formed to teach the fundamentals of football and cheerleading to area youth, some of which will be attending Bowsher, Libbey and Rogers, this has been done without corporate sponsorship and has been funded by fundraising efforts of those who support STARS. That alone is an achievement worth pointing out.

There’s more to STARS than just football though, in addition to the skills learned through participating in a team sport, STARS is also a part of the Feed Lucas County Children program, where just this summer alone over 150,000 hot meals will be served to children that when school is not in session who would face going without three meals a day. There’s also a food education component to the Feed Lucas County Children Program that I think is noteworthy, as an example this week and next week they are focusing on different types of raw fruits served with lunch to give them the opportunity to broaden their taste experiences with raw fruit.

Baldemar Velásquez: Call to the fields…

I’ve been following the series of letters that are being shared online in LaPrensa by Baldemar Velásquez, the first two letters were blogged about here earlier and now both three and four are online with links to the first two if you missed them.

Baldemar has gone to North Carolina to work in the tobacco fields with the workers there to experience first hand a small taste of what their lives are like. I highly recommend this series and while I especially commend him for having the courage to do this, I also commend LaPrensa for sharing it.

McDonald’s is more evil than Wal-Mart?

It’s often stated by some that Wal-Mart is evil because they don’t provide adequate health care and some who work there require public assistance. Yet if you read the latest research from Policy Matters (curtsy to Bill at the Daily Bellwether) you’ll discover that Wal-Mart did have the largest number of employees receiving Medicaid; 13,141 of the 52,000 some employees state wide but McDonalds came in second for that category (11,446 employees) and first in Food stamp enrollment and cash benefits.

Baldemar Velásquez to spend a week in North Carolina tobacco farm…

A letter I read over on LaPrensa that I felt should be pointed out, it was written by Baldemar Velásquez:

This coming Sunday, July 27, 2008, I will move into a labor camp in the most difficult time of the year. North Carolina leads the nation in heat stroke deaths, many of the past cases happen in July and August, when men are not only battling the heat but also nicotine poisoning.

The workers FLOC represents in North Carolina harvest 26 different crops, ranging from cucumbers to tobacco to Christmas trees. In my farmwork history, I’ve worked in all those harvests or close to them, row crops, bush or tree crops, but never anything close to tobacco with its particular challenges.

Round Table: George Sarantou vs Wade Kapszukiewicz

Jeff Smith today focuses on energy, gas prices with Toledo City Councilman George Sarantou and Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz on WTVG’s “Round Table”. The men were guests of the program to talk about the problem and what solutions there were. Also by phone they had Thomas Pyle who’s from the I.E.R. (Institute for Energy Research) in DC. I know this is long, but I really recommend this for anyone interested in the energy debate. I think we all agree this is a critical issue and what is being stated here by both sides is so different on some parts of this that it is a huge issue that we should be concentrating on. It’s a rough transcript trying to get the essence of what was stated.

Pyle first gave a brief overview of what the I.E.R. does, which you can learn here. How this came up was a discussion that Jeff Smith had heard on a Detroit radio station about drilling for oil in the Great Lakes. (For those of you curious, currently directional drilling is not permitted in the Great Lakes though there are those who would like to see that change.)
