Lakewood elementary school construction

While the Lakewood City Schools planned to build or renovate seven elementary schools in its school construction program, the Ohio School Facilities Commission will only commit to funds for six, citing projected declines in enrollment. The District will form a task force to determine if residents want to independently fund construction of the seventh school.

Lakewood condominum construction pushed back

The slow housing market has delayed the start of work on the Cliffs on Rocky River condominiums in Lakewood. Developer Rick Foran now hopes that the first units will be ready for occupancy by 2010.

Update: the Lakewood Sun Post supplies details about the extension of the TIF agreement.

Condominium sales face challenges

The sluggish residential real estate market is making it difficult for developers to sell new condominiums in inner-ring suburbs. Several cities are offering incentives to spur investment, and developers are trying to entice buyers. Rysar is offering a free Smart car to purchasers at the Bluestone development in Cleveland Heights. Other developers have pulled out of projects. Al Neyer canceled the Terraces on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights. Experts predict that the market will rebound.

Fighting Dinosaurs? Lead Poisoning and Urban Redevelopment

Cleveland Natural History Museum

If these are average Clevelanders, living in older urban neighborhoods like around University Circle their entire lives, they have been lead poisoned, perhaps severely. Thursday morning, May 22nd, join 100s of NEOs leaders concerned with our community's health, intelligence, safety and economy meeting at the Cleveland Natural History Museum for a free breakfast, keynote discussion and breakout sessions about lead poisoning and urban redevelopment. I guarantee you will leave this brief event with a completely realigned understanding of the core barriers to the success of our urban neighborhoods, leading to better planning for a healthy, effective region in the future.

Mr. Fish: For God’s Sake, Save The Purple Parma

I know I’ve been on a Melt-related posting bender over the last few days, but this article was too good to pass up.

There is a group of people that are petitioning Melt Bar and Grilled owner/chef Matt Fish to put the Purple Parma, which features breaded/fried eggplant, permanently on the menu. They even circulated a petition and made t-shirts to help their cause.

That being said, we feel the introduction of the Purple Parma has been seen by many as a blessing of almost biblical proportions (see ???manna in the desert???). Since the dawn of the eggplant in southeast India nearly 4,000 years ago, a service of this magnitude has not been paid. Though you may think this verbose, perhaps an overstatement, the field of eggplant sandwichry has been lacking key ingredients. This oversight has kept the eggplant out of the spotlight while arguably bland meats have been bathed in the finest of seasonings, even the hotdog has gained carts and vendors to peddle the streets. Your interpretation of the eggplant and its breading has been a heroic protest to this stagnant chain of thought. Silently, and occasionally audibly (through the approving ???mmm???s of customers) this eggplant has been tried and tested, and in the pages attached, these people have offered their overwhelming approval.

You can read the rest of the story at the Lakewood Observer.

I’m a Big Cheese Now

I went to Melt (again!) this morning, to check out their Sunday Brunch menu.

I had the Wake & Bacon, which is essentially an omelette in sandwich form: 2 fried eggs, crisp bacon, and american cheese, between two huge pieces of toasted bread. I ate most of it, but had to take a good 1/3 of it home. Hello, lunch!

The wonderful waitress/bartender tipped me off to Melt’s Big Cheese Club: a loyalty program with some pretty cool perks. Next time you find yourself elbows-deep in a sandwich there, ask about it.

In other news, Slashfood picked up my post about the Parmageddon. Welcome, Slashfood readers!
