[video] Dissecting the Jewish vote & possible Lieberman or Cantor GOP VP pick

The NJDC, J Street and The Israel Project are mentioned within the speculation, commentary and analysis contained in this very informative news video. You can also see that the JTA’s Eric Fingerhut is not the Ohio Chancellor of Higher Education’s Eric Fingerhut.

Last night in The Chief Source live-blog, another live-blog attendee and I exchange thoughts on the Jewish vote this year. My opinion tracks with what’s presented in this JTA video, but to reiterate: you will find Jews all over the spectrum because first of all, Israel is not the one issue even for some American Jews who might be one-issue voters (although for sure it may be for others), and second of all, when Israel is the issue being discussed, ideas about what to do there and in relation to that country resemble a page in the Talmud, which is to say, many opinions around one framed statement.

Haveil Havalim #179 (Carnival of Jewish Blogging) posted; Internat’l Jewish Blogger Con

I think I missed a couple of Haveil Havalims while I was in Israel - kind of ironic when you think about it.

So here’s this week’s edition, hosted by Yehuda: Gaming and Blogging in the Holy Land.

Don’t miss his list of the bloggers who were involved with the first-ever International Jewish Blogger Convention.  I’m still reading posts about it, but here’s a quick article from Ha’aretz.  From what I’m gathering, the organization, Nefesh B’Nefesh organized it with the goal of helping people to consider making aliyah.  But I don’t exactly get that from the reviews I met - instead, it sounds as though it was an awesome meetup of folks who blog about all things Jewish and Israel.

Either way, kudos for it being conducted and since I missed it by two days this year, I hope I can plan a future trip to Israel around it. Hint, hint, hint.

Update: here’s a very nice post with photos.  I’m familiar with several of the blogs mentioned but mostly, I only know them from reading about them on a few others.

You can find photos for Day 12-15 here.  I hope to be doing some real writing about the trip and a good chunk of online album organizing over the weekend.

As always, if you have any questions, ask away.

You never write, you never blog

Yeah, well, given the threats I was getting just before leaving town for two weeks, I didn’t feel like making a big announcement but if you’re curious to know where I was, you can start here.I hope to write often and in great detail over the next several days but the fact is, it’s hard to imagine that my writing from this moment on won’t somehow reflect the last two weeks I spent in Israel with my family and 31 members of my synagogue, our tour guide, bus driver, youth counselors and many other individuals along the way. What do you want to know about first?

Tzipi Livni getting closer to governing Israel? Olmert not running

From JTA.org:

Ehud Olmert has decided not to run for the leadership of his centrist Kadima Party.

The Israeli prime minister was expected to make the annoucement during a hastily organized speech at 8 p.m. Israel time (1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time).

The Prime Minister’s Office did not give details of the speech, but Israeli media are reporting that Olmert will announce he is not running in primaries for the leadership of Kadima. Olmert has been the subject of a number of corruption investigations. Some of his government colleagues have called on him to step down, saying the scandals are impeding peace talks with the Palestinians and Syria.

Omert’s decision is expected to turn the spotlight on Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the second-ranking member of the party.

Livni was the subject of a lengthy New York Times Magazine profile almost exactly a year ago. I’d urge people who are following the Middle East to read it. Now.

Innovative Clevelander gets AVI CHAI Fellowship

Aharon Horwitz is one of the first AVI CHAI Fellows

Lila Hanft, CJN, 05/15/08

Even with e-mail, voice mail, and cell phones, it’s been hard to catch up with Cleveland native Aharon Horwitz, 28, this week.

On Monday he was in New York with collaborator Ariel Beery to receive an AVI CHAI Fellowship of $225,000 over three years. Tuesday it was back home to Israel to attend a multi-day president’s conference, and on Thursday, Horwitz was scheduled to speak on a panel titled “Israel and the Diaspora: Aliyah and the Special Relationship.”

Horwitz, who lives in Jerusalem, and Beery, who lives in New York, co-founded and co-direct the PresenTense Group. Their winning fellowship proposal is to expand their flagship project, PresenTense magazine, and the PresenTense Institute for Creative Zionism (PICZ), an incubator for socially minded entrepreneurs.

The AVI CHAI Fellowship, which identifies “emerging Jewish leaders,” was awarded to only four other recipients in addition to Horwitz and Beery. Horwitz says, via e-mail from Jerusalem, that “Ariel and I are excited, inspired, and grateful to The AVI CHAI Foundation for this fellowship opportunity.”

But he adds that part of their project is the belief that “ultimately what the Jewish Community needs is not necessarily ‘leaders,’ but rather doers who are ready to roll up their sleeves and engage in the hard work of future building.” The PresentTense Group’s projects are all “permeated” with this attitude, which Horwitz identifies as “the Zionist ethos -- and the business startup culture ethos.”
