Buffalo News Examines Shrinking Cities

The Buffalo News is examining shrinking cities and asking what they are doing. In a three-part series, the paper is examining vacant homes in Buffalo, and today, in part three, looking at efforts in Youngstown, Flint and Rochester. There's also a link to video with Jay and Hunter, though I'm not sure if it's new or old, I couldn't get the sound to work when I tried it.

Other stories in the series:
Neglected homes and vacant lots leave Buffalo residents angry
Buffalo wants to tear down its abandoned homes

In Buffalo, a different story emerges. The residents are concerned that the city owns so much low cost housing and, instead of rehabilitating it for its residents in need of that housing, it is being razed. It's an interesting distinction that raises a question: Are we examining how the 2010 plan can be leveraged to better integrate the city and care for the less fortunate, or are we merely concerned with beautification and cost savings?
