Can We Have More Nuke Plants? Yes We Can

So says Senator John McCain.

From Rueters (because AP is crap)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., June 18 (Reuters) - Republican John McCain promised on Wednesday to put the United States on course to build 45 new nuclear reactors by 2030 if elected president as part of a plan to move the country toward energy independence.

McCain, his party's presumptive nominee in this fall's presidential election, is laying out a strategy to wean the United States from foreign oil, an issue that has risen to the top of voters' minds as gasoline prices soar.

The Arizona senator has argued forcefully for more nuclear plants, seeing them as part of a solution to fighting climate change and establishing U.S. energy independence.

John McCain, Can We Drill? Yes We Can!

Libs say we can't drill our way out of this.

To them I respond: "Yes we can!"

Senator McCain is coming around, I think.
Sen. John McCain called yesterday for an end to the federal ban on offshore oil drilling, offering an aggressive response to high gasoline prices and immediately drawing the ire of environmental groups that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has courted for months.

The move is aimed at easing voter anger over rising energy prices by freeing states to open vast stretches of the country's coastline to oil exploration. In a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, nearly 80 percent said soaring prices at the pump are causing them financial hardship, the highest in surveys this decade.

Processes spawn faster than threads?

In general, processes take longer to start than threads. This makes sense if you think about it - a thread lives within the memory space of its parent process, so it takes less work to set one up. (This is a gross oversimplification, but to be honest I find the details of process management incredibly uninteresting in 2008.) I assumed that this difference would hold for the Python processing module. Apparently it doesn't, at least on Mac OS X. Surprise!

Spawning 100 children with Thread took 1.04s
Spawning 100 children with Process took 0.60s

The above result is for starting and joining the children serially. I get the same results in all of these variations:

  • Starting them all at once, then joining them all at once.
  • Using 10 children or 1,000 children.
  • Having each child sleep for one second (to ensure that they're all actually alive at the same time).

I don't know whether this is due to goodness in OS X, or processing, or fork(), or just Unix in general. In any case, it's very good news. I'd dismissed processing for use on the client side of BitBacker because "process management is hard and they're too heavyweight." Clearly at least one of those complaints is invalid; maybe the other is as well. It would be a wonderful relief if I could use processes. I'm going to need parallelization of one form or another soon, and I'm definitely not going to start sprinkling threads around. Only madness lies down that path.

Here's the code that generated those results, in case you're interested:

import time, threading, processing
for cls in [threading.Thread, processing.Process]:
    start = time.time()
    for _ in range(100):
        child = cls(target=lambda: None)
        child.start()
        child.join()
    print 'Spawning 100 children with %s took %.2fs' % (
        cls.__name__, time.time() - start)

You Can't Appease Everyone

Ann Coulter knocks another one out of the park.

After decades of comparing Nixon to Hitler, Reagan to Hitler and Bush to Hitler, liberals have finally decided it is wrong to make comparisons to Hitler. But the only leader to whom they have applied their newfound rule of thumb is: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

While Ahmadinejad has not done anything as starkly evil as cut the capital gains tax, he does deny the Holocaust, call for the destruction of Israel, deny the existence of gays in Iran and refuses to abandon his nuclear program despite protests from the United Nations. That's the only world leader we're not allowed to compare to Hitler.

President Bush's speech at the Knesset two weeks ago was somewhat more nuanced than liberals' Hitler arguments. He did not simply jump up and down chanting: "Ahmadinejad is Hitler!" Instead, Bush condemned a policy of appeasement toward madmen, citing Neville Chamberlain's ill-fated talks with Adolf Hitler.

Suspiciously, Bush's speech was interpreted as a direct hit on B. Hussein Obama's foreign policy -- and that's according to Obama's supporters.

So to defend Obama, who -- according to his supporters -- favors appeasing madmen, liberals expanded the rule against ad Hitlerum arguments to cover any mention of the events leading to World War II. A ban on "You're like Hitler" arguments has become liberals' latest excuse to ignore history.

From CBS via Michelle Malkin
Obama also spoke about his uncle, who was part of the American brigade that helped to liberate Auschwitz. He said the family legend is that, upon returning from war, his uncle spent six months in an attic. “Now obviously, something had really affected him deeply, but at that time there just weren’t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain,” Obama said. “That’s why this idea of making sure that every single veteran, when they are discharged, are screened for post-traumatic stress disorder and given the mental health services that they need – that’s why it’s so important.”

Hey GOP, You Are Losing To These Guys???

From the The American Thinker

This is what the GOP is running against: people who want to lose a war, who are keeping alive an environmentalist scam, who (as a byproduct of that scam) have created conditions of serious hunger across the world, and who would not mind seeing a recession in the U.S., no matter how many people it hurts.

How do you lose against a hand like this? You lose by throwing your cards down and collapsing under the table whining about being forced to play at all. That's what the GOP is doing -- it can't be described in any other way.

Hillary Crushes Obama in KY, Eyes Popular Vote

OK so Missus Clinton went into today claiming the popular vote (if you count Michigan and Florida.

This evening she crushes the putative nominee by 35 points, or about 250,000 votes.

With record turn out she could be ahead in popular vote after Puerto Rico, even without Michigan where Obama wasn't on the ballot but counting Florida where they both were on the ballot.

Hillary brings the Dem supers a compelling case
- more popular votes
- wins in key states (OH, PA, WV, KY) basically he'd have to write off Appalachia
- more experience
- more swing voters (in other words more of her's would go to McCain than his would)

Bet the Democrats wish they had winner take all and this would be over.

Another compelling point is that his whole delegate lead is due to caucuses and most of those caucuses are in red states. Do Dems want their nominee chosen by Idaho and Utah? Heck, NY and NJ and CT and FL picked the GOP's.

UPDATE: Senator Obama should win Oregon which will reduce some of her impressive vote margin for tonight.

CodeMash 2008 Wrap Up

A little late, I know, but I finally got some time to put my thoughts into place.  First I want to send out my congratulations to Jim Holmes, Brian Prince, Jason Gilmore, Jason Follas, Dianne Marsh, Jeff Blakenburg, Josh Holmes, and John Hopkins for putting on ANOTHER wonderful event.  I went into CodeMash '08 with very high expectations based on last years spectacular event, and the group did not disappoint.  A quick thank you to the CodeMash sponsors for helping those folks do that job!  Your loyalty to the development community will not be forgotten by this developer.

It was kicked off by a very insightful panel on how to "sell" yourself and your ideals to clients and/or colleagues.  Then were the two days of sessions which were again some of the most insightful and educational I've ever had the pleasure of attending.

The keynotes were five star once again, with Scott Hanselman, Neal Ford, and Brian Geotz all doing an outstanding job.

I strongly urge everyone to go listen to Chris Woodruff's CodeMash Podcasts, as well as checkout the CodeMash site for slide decks and session audio.

Of course the other half the conference occurs after the sessions are long over and deep into the night.  I had great conversations with folks like Joe O'Brien (who is a way bigger twitter addict then me, Keith) , Jay Wren, and Steven Harman that I am still digesting over.

Let the countdown to CodeMash 2009 begin!

Happy New Year!

What a joy to welcome in 2008 with my husband, brother and sister-in-law at the First Night Akron celebration! Even though this event has been going on every New Year's Eve for the past twelve years, this was my first time attending it, but it will not be my last.

After a great dinner at the Otani Japanese Restaurant in the Merriman valley, we went downtown to explore a virtual smorgasbord of entertainment, all for the cost of our $10 button; even the parking and bus ride around town was included. My personal favorite was the Magical Theatre Company’s presentation of Bunnicula at the Akron Library. The comments of the little 3 or 4 year old sitting behind me during the play were as entertaining as the performance. There was certainly something for everyone from toddler to senior citizen at this celebration. My husband’s favorite was the harmony of the Akron Derbytown Barbershop Chorus at St. Bernard Church, and we all enjoyed the great rhythms of the University of Akron’s Steel Drum band.

We kept warm jumping around to the beat of “Cats on Holiday” as the New Year approached and welcomed in 2008 with a bang, blaze of colors, and the rockin’ sound of music from Akron’s WKDD radio. I had a great New Year’s Eve and didn’t even touch a drop of alcohol. It was enough of a high to celebrate with our community and look through the free 3D glasses at the kaleidoscope of color that emanated from the fireworks. I never realized that you could get such a psychedelic effect that way. If you have never attended First Night Akron, you might want to give it a try next year. I plan to make it an annual event.

Now that the holiday is over, I am resolving to be more organized and stay in shape. I make these resolutions at the start of every year, but I never keep them to my satisfaction. I also am making a new commitment to citizenship this year. I've posted my political resolutions on the Cosmic Message Blog.

Happy 2008 to all!

Diary of a Mighty Bastard

Diary of a Mighty Bastard

2008: The Preview!...

As 2007 turns into 2008, some predictions and thoughts for the next year:

Personal:
* I lost 25 pounds last year, but have regained about 5 of those pounds over the holidays. My goal is to get below 200 pounds, and I'm about 220. Starting on the third, I'll be back on the diet full time (I'm already exercising on the elliptical every day)
* I've gotten scruffy- growing a goatee for the second time in my life. Not sure how long it'll stay. Probably will be off before March, but you never know...
* Still playing World of Warcraft. Our guild has gotten past Mulgar, but are stopped at Gruul the Dragonkiller. Having a blast, though.
* My brother gave me the controller for Guitar Hero, so expect me to be playing the game constantly. At this rate, I'll never finish Final Fantasy XII.
* I'll still be working at my stand-up comedy, at least as long as I have Monday Nights open.

Sports Predictions for 2008:
* The New England Patriots will beat the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl.
* Barring Injuries, The San Antonio Spurs will repeat as NBA Champions. I'm starting to believe that Tim Duncan may be the greatest basketball player of all time.
* The key to the Detroit Tigers will be Dontrelle Willis- if he regains his form from 3 years ago, they may be unstoppable. If he doesn't, even a great year by Miguel Cabrera won't help the Tigers get past the Cleveland Indians.
* The Indians will win the World Series in 2008.
* The Cubs won't.

Political Predictions for 2008:
* The Republican nomination will be a dogfight, probably leading to a brokered convention as five different nominees take various states. In the end, the ticket will be John McCain as President, Fred Thompson as Vice President.
* The Democratic nomination will also be a short bloodbath. By the morning of Feb. 6th, we'll know who the nominee is. If Hilary dominates the states on Feb. 5th, she'll knock out Obama and Edwards. If she doesn't dominate, Obama will have the momentum to take her out. I don't see Edwards lasting as a signifcant figure beyond the 5th.
* If the Demoncrats nominate Obama, he will win the general election. If they nominate Hilary, the Republicans will win.
* If, by October, the polls show one party clearly winning the Presidential race, the other party will end up picking up a huge number of seats in Congress (both the Senate and House), as the American Public decide they don't want either party to control everything.

Other predictions:
* The Writer's Strike will last until at least June of next year, and will end with the writers getting very little other than a face-saving gesture.
* The World Series of Poker in 2008 will be won by a 'known' poker player
* The only movie that I'll want to see in the theater is The Dark Knight

Here's wishing everyone a fantastic 2008!

Hillary Does Another Boomerang Hit

How much more of this are we gonna see? (hopefully not much) First there’s the hit: On a conference call with reporters this morning, the Clinton campaign knocked Barack Obama over a report in the Wall Street Journal today that Obama “won the endorsement of the Teamsters earlier this year after privately telling the union he [...]

Clinton WILL Go Nuclear

In case anyone was still wondering the answer is yes. Yes she will burn this thing down around her: Hillary Clinton’s campaign has a secret weapon to build its delegate count, but her top strategists say privately that any attempt to deploy it would require a sharp (and by no means inevitable) shift in the [...]

Is Hillary Clinton Really a Republican?

Her campaign is looking more and more Republican all the time: Hat tip to Ben Smith at Politico, who writes: The piece is particularly striking coming from Clinton, who has been seen for most of her career as a firm advocate of gun control, but more recently has emerged — without dramatically shifting her stance on specific [...]

New CBS Poll: Obama Bouncing Back from Wright, Virtual Tie with Hillary vs. McCain

I think how he’s handled the negative attacks has been extraordinary. I also think people see this and it - not some 3am Rovian attack ad - tells them he’ll be cool under fire. The new CBS/NYT Poll shows Obama rebounding to go up 11 versus McCain in a poll that had him [...]

Obama’s Closing Argument to North Carolina (Video)

“Politics didn’t lead me to working people, working people led me to politics” That’s a great line. - Also running in Indiana: - Both are very good spots. He’s had problems with the “blue collar” or “working class” demographic because in my view they don’t know him and white working class just can’t seem to relate to him. [...]

Obama Hits Clinton in Indiana on “Bogus Gas Tax Holiday”

Good stuff. Hillary supporters will no doubt call this a negative ad. I find it pretty hard hitting, but hardly a 3am 9/11 smear. I don’t see the negativity at all. Just calling Clinton on her bullshit pandering:

Obama: Will the Democratic Party Stand up for the Next Generation?

This is a new line and I like it. “The question now is…will the democratic party stand up for the next generation?” - (ht Tim @BI)

City supports Rotek expansion

from the advocate website
Aurora — The city continues to take steps to keep one of its largest employers from moving.

At City Council’s April 28 session, members passed two ordinances in an effort to convince Rotek to stay here and not move to Kentucky.

Rotek plans a $90 million expansion, but is also considering leaving for Florence, Ky., just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.

The first item passed will have the city and Rotek entering into a Community Reinvestment Area, in which Rotek will receive a 15-year, 100 percent tax abatement.

Finance Director Bob Paul said of the proposed $90 million expansion, $17 million is for real estate and $73 million for equipment. Only the real estate falls under the abatement.

Rotek would receive $3.4 million in tax abatement during the 15 years.

The other ordinance will allow the allocation of up to $450,000 of the budgeted 2008 road paving program to improve Route 43 in front of the plant. (more…)

Clinton Says Don’t Switch Sides? Really.

I wonder what would make Hillary Clinton say this: “Anyone, anyone, who voted for either of us should be absolutely committed to voting for the other” in the general election, Clinton said during an hourlong meeting with The Indianapolis Star Editorial Board. “I’m going to shout that from the mountaintops and the valleys and everywhere I [...]
